Hermes Agent: The Open-Source AI Agent Framework That Gets Smarter Over Time
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI Agent framework launched by NousResearch on February 25, 2026. Within weeks of its release, it accumulated 57,000 GitHub Stars — making it one of the fastest-growing open-source Agent projects of the year.
What did it get right? I think the answer is a problem most Agent frameworks haven’t seriously addressed: memory.
The Blind Spot in Most Agent Frameworks
The typical design logic of current Agent frameworks goes like this: receive request → plan → execute → return output. Then the conversation ends and nothing is retained.
You spend time teaching an Agent your preferred report format today. Tomorrow it’s back to factory settings. You spent three hours last month walking it through an analysis workflow. Next time, you start over.
This is exactly what Hermes Agent is designed to solve.
The Three-Layer Memory Architecture
Hermes Agent structures memory in three layers:
Layer 1: Session Memory (Working Memory)
Current conversation context — same as most Agents.
Layer 2: Persistent Memory
User preferences, behavioral patterns, and background knowledge stored across sessions. Rather than dumping all conversation history into context (which would explode token costs), it uses SQLite with FTS5 full-text search indexing — letting the Agent proactively search its own memory store when needed.
Layer 3: Skill Memory
This is the most interesting layer. When an Agent completes a complex task, it automatically abstracts the workflow into a skill document that can be called directly on similar future tasks. Skills self-improve through use.
Together, these three layers make Hermes Agent behave more like an employee who grows every day — rather than a contractor who shows up fresh each time with no context.
The Foundation: Hermes 4
Hermes Agent is built on Hermes 4, NousResearch’s model family released in August 2025. Based on Meta’s Llama 3.1 architecture, it comes in three sizes: 14B, 70B, and 405B.
Key technical specs:
- 131K token context window: Process entire codebases or very long documents in a single pass
- Hybrid Reasoning Mode:
<think>...</think>tags let it toggle between fast responses and deep reasoning - 35B MoE variant: Mixture-of-Experts architecture, only 3B active parameters per token — balancing speed and capability
- Training scale: Rejection sampling with 1,000 task-specific verifiers; training data expanded from 1M to ~5M samples
Model-Agnostic and Cross-Platform
Hermes Agent is model-agnostic — it supports 200+ LLM providers including OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Nous Portal, OpenRouter, HuggingFace, and local models. You’re not locked into any single API.
More notable is its cross-platform strategy: one gateway, running across 15+ platforms simultaneously.
CLI, Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Matrix, Email, SMS, DingTalk, Feishu, WeCom, Home Assistant — deploy once and every channel shares the same Agent instance, the same memory, and the same skill library. No need to maintain separate Agent instances per platform.
This design has real appeal for use cases that need to serve users across multiple channels.
Practical Use Cases
Based on community feedback so far, Hermes Agent performs well in:
High-repetition research tasks. Tracking weekly developments on a specific topic, compiling regular competitive intelligence. The Agent accumulates background knowledge about the domain over time, and output quality in later runs noticeably exceeds early runs.
Personal assistants. Running Hermes Agent through Telegram or WhatsApp and letting it remember your scheduling preferences, work habits, and common formats. The communication overhead of delegating routine tasks decreases the longer you use it.
Model training data generation. Hermes integrates with NousResearch’s Atropos RL framework to generate fine-tuning trajectories. This is a niche most general-purpose Agent frameworks don’t address.
It also ships with 47 built-in tools covering browser automation, web search, cron scheduling, batch processing, and more.
Who Should Use It
Hermes Agent is MIT-licensed and open-source. It’s a good fit if you:
- Want a single personal Agent coordinated across multiple messaging platforms
- Are exploring how to give Agents genuine long-term memory
- Need to deploy Agents in private environments without depending on specific cloud APIs
- Are doing LLM research and need high-quality training data generation
If your use case is one-off tasks or short demos, Hermes’ three-layer memory architecture will feel heavier than necessary. But if your Agent needs to run long-term, accumulate knowledge, and serve consistent users — this framework is worth a serious look.
